Hi, my name is Kevin Lam.
This is a true story. Not one of those stories people make up JUST to sell a product.
Before I started TexasSEO.com just 2 years ago, I was fresh out the US Navy after 5 years as an AME (Aviation Structural Mechanic Safety Egressman). I was an E-5, for all you military guys that want to know, and was offered a job as a “Product Manager” and “SEO Manager” for a new start-up company similar to Yelp.
Things were great… I did everything they needed me to… everything from content management, to designing, to coding, to concepts, to SEO, to quality control on about 12 domains. Thing is… they already had a content manager, a designer, a coder and so on…. they ALL had at LEAST one bachelor’s degree. Most had double majors.

Anyway, are you ready for this?
Sadly enough, the English major (content manager) couldn’t write or spell. The designer, couldn’t design. The “Marketing Manager” couldn’t market. The coder, couldn’t code. The writer… well, she was just annoying. She was one of those snotty brats that like to suck up to the CEO. Blah!
Yeah, this was Dallas, Texas… not Hong Kong or something!
So fast-forward 5 weeks into it.
I’m asked to work with the “Marketing Manager” to figure out how to increase traffic to the websites. She’s more like a PR Manager, not a marketer, but she had precedence over me for some dumb reason. I guess it goes back to me not having that degree. Who knows what they were thinking.
I already knew how to send more targeted traffic to their sites, they just had to listen to me… I mean, I tweaked their PPC campaign which quadrupled their traffic while spending HALF the cost! It doesn’t mean much if the daily budget was only like $20, but what I did was working.
Any how, I told the marketing manager that we only received about 100-150 visitors for the day before. She told me it was impossible, she had been spending thousands upon thousands of dollars on promotions and doing all kinds of stuff. So I showed her the Google Analytics report.

At that moment, I happened to notice the CEO walk by staring at us with fear and frustration. I knew something was up.
3 minutes later, my manager pulled me into his office quite furiously asking me why in hell am I giving out company information.
Now I’m confused. She’s the “Marketing Manager”… I thought I was supposed to share this crap with her??? He was the person who instructed me to even work with her.
I’m just not used to the corporate world, I guess… but they DID hire me based on my previous experience in Internet marketing. Yet they screwed up and don’t take my advice. Just makes no sense, you know?
So yeah, him and the CEO were freak’n out about the TRUTH about their actual traffic because they had been making claims to the media and their customers that they are getting MILLIONS of visitors… yeah, millions!!!!! But out of all 12 websites, they were lucky to get passed 10,000 total visitors.
The saddest thing about it is… the sales reps don’t even know! And they’re responsible for generating most of the traffic! So hilarious, right?
They’re selling a scam and didn’t even know it! Okay, that part isn’t funny though. So as soon as I had that talk with him and got all the details out, I walked over to my computer, deleted all of my info, packed my bag and left.
I called my wife on the way home and told her that I had quit my job.

That was literally what pushed me to start my own SEO business. I haven’t looked back since and it has been the greatest decision of my life.

Several days later I purchased the domain, TexaSEO.com, for $500. Yes, just for the domain name. I started designing, writing content and preparing my business. A month later, someone offered me the .org and .net extensions of TexasSEO.
They weren’t worth anything… practically zero traffic or PR, but I didn’t want my competition to buy it. So I got them for $1,200.
Within 2-3 months, I was already outranking companies who have been in business for 5, 10 and even 15 years!
It wasn’t easy though.
I wasted a lot of my time on so many things… whether it was hiring and firing over 20 workers, buying things I didn’t need, doing all the designing and marketing myself… or what I dread most: writing a free analysis for prospects.
